Cathcarts Xtra Pale Ale, 4.2% ABV
This golden beer is packed full of New Zealand hop varieties, resulting in an abundance of tropical fruit aromas and flavours throughout.
Established in 2005 and crowned New Zealand Champion Brewery in 2014, Townshend has now moved to Motueka, at the top of the South Island, on the main route to the Able Tasman national park. These larger premises have allowed Townshend to increase brewing capacity, to meet the demand for its beers.
As well as cask ales, it also makes cider from its own orchard, barrel-aged stouts and premium Pilseners.
Martin Townshend used to have a weekly radio slot, talking about all things beer, and wrote a weekly beer column for the local newspaper. He gradually gained knowledge of the industry and decided that he, himself, wanted to start brewing. He owned a chip shop at the time, so started off brewing by day, frying by night!
A couple of regular customers from the chip shop became good friends and ended up buying their local pub together, giving them an outlet for their beers.
