Since launching Fish Friday in 2013, we’ve served around 10 million fish-and-chip meals in our pubs across the UK. Soon to celebrate its 155th birthday, fish and chips has long been a classic culinary double act whose popularity never ceases, whether enjoyed as a take-away or as a warm pub meal.
It’s thanks to resourceful housewives, who were said to cut potatoes into fishy shapes when the rivers froze over, that we now enjoy these two iconic ingredients together. Long before the arrival of pub grub, generations of hard-working families would look forward to Friday’s fish supper. Our six million Wetherspoon customers are proof that the tradition is still very much alive.
Fished with a conscience
Wetherspoon sources only 100% sustainable cod (haddock in selected pubs) from those fisheries which have been certified by the National Marine Fisheries Service. By catching only certain-size fish, using long-line fishing and larger hooks, others are given the chance to reach maturity, so helping to keep stocks maintained.
