Three new craft bottles

Distinctive brews from Maine and Virginia and award-winning ale from Peterborough added to our extensive line-up

Our craft beer range continues to grow in popularity, as well as in choice.

The team at Wetherspoon has sourced three new bottled beers to add to the selection, all brewed here in the UK, although two have their roots based firmly ‘over the pond’.

Regular craft-beer-drinkers at Wetherspoon will now be familiar with the two US breweries Shipyard and Devils Backbone.

Both American outfits have teamed up with Wolverhampton-based Marston’s Beer Company to produce two fantastic beers, Shipyard Rye Pale Ale (4.3% ABV) and Devils Backbone American IPA (5.2% ABV) – right here in the UK.

Pioneered in Portland, Maine (USA), and brewed at Park brewery in Wolverhampton, the Shipyard Rye Pale Ale is an American-style pale ale. Brewed with rye crystal malt, this Rye Pale Ale has a spiced, nutty taste, balanced with caramel-toffee flavours.

As with all of their beers, this brew is packed full of American hops – and the Amarillo, Citra, Cascade and Summit combine for an upfront, punchy, orange aroma and lingering citrus tang.

The black bear is intrinsically linked with the state of Maine as the mascot of the university, and this brew is in homage to this fruit-loving American native.

Shipyard Brewing Company has been making award-winning craft beer in Portland, Maine, since 1994. It now has a growing range of beers available in the UK, brewed in collaboration with Marston’s Beer Company, all of which pay homage to the city of Portland, Maine, and all things shipyard.

Created in Lexington, Virginia (USA), Devils Backbone American IPA is brewed at Banks’s brewery, also in Wolverhampton.

The beer features a mix of English and classic American hops, giving it a bright, snappy hop character.

The English hop varieties East Kent Goldings and Admiral provide the underlying bitterness and flavour, while the late-hopped American varieties add a depth of flavour and give the beer a real west coast-style citrus-pine nose.

Devils Backbone is named after the mountain range where the brewery is located, in the foothills of Roseland, Virginia. It is where the DB team has been brewing since 1988.

Their adventure continues with this signature American IPA, now brewed in the UK, ensuring a fresher taste, while retaining the authentic flavours of this great pioneering brewery.

Our third new offering is Oakham Ales Green Devil IPA (6.0% ABV), an award-winning brew from Peterborough-based Oakham Ales. This beer won ‘champion cask ale’, for the second time in two years, at The International Brewing Awards 2015.

This golden ale has an amazing hop harvest aroma, with tropical fruit bursting through. It is smooth and fruity, with hints of passion fruit and mango, plus a crisp aftertaste.

Originally owned by John Wood, the multiaward-winning microbrewery Oakham Ales was located in The Brewery Tap, in the transformed old labour exchange, in Westgate, Peterborough. Production moved to a new 75-barrel brewhouse in 2006, to keep up with demand – now worldwide.
